get specific, or get lost...

Why you lack clarity (and how to fix it)

Happy Thursday, Reader

Specificity is the common denominator in success.

Knowing what you want, and going after it with full intensity,

not only means that you’ll get there

but that you’ll create a sense of purpose on the way there too.

Here’s something I learnt the hard way:

If you’re aiming at nothing, you’ll hit it, 100% of the time.

In other words, having no chief definite aim, no project,

or no sense of direction -

violently spins your mental compass until you lose your equilibrium, and are left floating in the abyss, trying to find firm ground again.

I had a conversation yesterday where someone said to me
“Well, I don’t know what I want...” when it came to her relationships

(a very successful Hollywood actress mind you - so she knew what she wanted in other areas of her life)

My immediate thought was, have you taken the time to ask yourself?

To self-inquire? To literally draw it out?

Most of us haven’t and so we are carried by life's current into mediocrity because of that.

You have to get specific in every area to live in alignment (Health, Wealth, Relationships are the evergreen pillars that need nurturing)

“The idle mind is the devil's workshop”

is a line from Veidic scripture that holds an ocean of depth...

I’m a firm believer that any given point, we should be working on something (even if it's just ourselves) and in the words of Dr James Hollis:

“It’s not what you do, it’s what you do it in service for.”

This is not to be conflated or confused with “hustle sigma grindset 💯💵📈”

Because ‘to work’ doesn’t mean to slave, it means to serve.

And what you choose to work on, will also work on you.

It doesn’t have to be huge projects, million dollar brands, or cinematic masterpieces

(although those 3 are always top of mind for me lol)

It can be just working on you, your family, or your community.

But when you have no north stars established, you enter the dangerous mental state of ’the idle mind’

This is the very first thing I establish and attempt to refine with my 1-1 clients.

Idleness isn’t ‘peace’

It’s stagnation, and stagnation breeds confusion.

Peace is achieved through clarity,

and clarity is birthed through specificity.

In simple terms - idleness means that when your mind has no meaningful

direction, it becomes fertile ground for distraction,

overthinking, self-sabotage, and even destructive thoughts or habits.

Stillness can be powerful (I’m probably the one you hear about it most from) but idleness is different.

Stagnation acts like a vacuum the mind rushes to fill, often with anxiety, temptation, or regret.

A monk in stillness is not idle.

A writer daydreaming is not idle.

Even sitting in silence can be sacred if it’s conscious.

But when you’re drifting without intention, doomscrolling,

looping regrets, escaping boredom

that’s when the “devil” steps in

Not as a literal figure, but as your lower impulses: procrastination, fear, envy, addiction, compulsive comparison.

Steven Pressfield in the War of Art calls this force “Resistance”

Napoleon Hill in Outwitting the Devil describes this as the portal for mental control and becoming a “drifter” in life.

Same force, different names, and you've certainly felt it.

So the antidote isn’t constant busyness.

It’s conscious engagement.

Direct your thoughts… or they will direct you.

Create meaning… or you’ll crave distraction.

The man with no purpose seeks pleasure in distraction.

What’s killing your clarity? Abundance.

I tend to use abundance in a positive tone - and I still do.

But a friend told me “Abundance of choice can also starve you of clarity.”

Bar.

It’s true - why do you think most of your time is spent flicking through titles on Netflix instead of actually watching something?Or Scrolling through playlists before hitting play?

In an abundant world, information and clarity is about filtering

not gathering information.

Your ability to filter will determine how successful AND how happy you will be.

Filtering your inputs by looking at what you consume,

what conversations you have, who you meet…

All play a role in how much clarity you'll create.

For example, if you are available at all times,

and you don’t guard your hours,

or set hard stops and have trouble saying No to people

I have some news for you…

You are killing your clarity.

An abundance of choice can create shiny object syndrome or fear of missing out syndrome.

You can’t commit to one thing because your mind isn’t fully all in; it’s half in, and half out searching for the next best thing.

You don’t know what business to pick because you entertain a thousand different models

You don’t know how to date because there’s always one more swipe available

You don’t know how to focus because there’s always one more event to attend

But the greatest minds and performers in the world select their priorities and get comfortable ignoring the rest.

I am genuinely comfortable to ignore the parties, outgoings and events more often than not, because it doesn't currently serve my mission.

So in that same breath,

Get specific…

Become conscious about what it you want

Select your priorities

Don’t create the space to ruminate, to invite mental fog and anxiety.

Focus on one to few things at a time

I guarantee your clarity, sense of purpose and well-being will skyrocket.

And watch the universe create a way for you.

P.S - I have one spot open for July in my 1-1 program, if you’re a high level performer, founder or creator you can apply here and if you’re a right fit I’ll contact you personally for an alignment call 💫
